Cyrus Chestnut Information
Cyrus Chestnut (January 17, 1963) is an American jazz pianist, composer, and producer born in Baltimore, Maryland. Chestnut started to learn piano at seven and began playing at Mount Calvary Baptist Church. He studied classical music at the Peabody Institute when he was nine and earned a jazz composition and arranging degree from Boston’s Berklee College of Music in 1985.
Chestnut released his debut album on Telarc International Records in 2006 entitled “Genuine Chestnut.” His regular trio accompanied him during the recording, which consisted of Neal Smith on drums and Michael Hawkins on bass. Russell Malone (guitar) and Steven Kroon (percussion) were included as additional artists in the session. Chestnut has worked with several record labels in his career, such as WJ3 Records, Telarc, Warner Bros, Atlantic Records, Evidence Records, and Alfa Records.
As a leader of the band, Cyrus Chestnut released numerous notable albums, including Kaleidoscope (2018), There’s a Sweet, Sweet Spirit (2017), Natural Essence (2015), A Million Colors in Your Mind (2014), Midnight Melodies (2014), Soul Brother Cool (2013), Cyrus Chestnut Trio – Moonlight Sonata (2011), The Cyrus Chestnut Quartet (2010), Cyrus Chestnut Trio – Journeys (2010), and Spirit (2008). Chestnut has collaborated with several well-known artists, including James Carter, Michael Carvin, Freddy Cole, Carta Cook, Elvis Costello, Dee Daniels, Michael Dease, Dr. John, and the Donald Harrison Band, Cynthia Felton, Jimmy Greene, Mark Gross, and Roy Hargrove.
