Cuba Llego - A Celebration of Cuban Music Information
House of Music is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and its upcoming concert, "Cuba Llego: A Celebration of Cuban Music," will include legendary Cuban bands Los Van Van and Havana D'Primera. The money made from the concert is donated to local organizations that help at-risk and underprivileged children in San Diego.
After the revolution, Los Van Van remained one of Cuba's most popular bands. Juan Formell, the band's bass player and director from its inception in 1969 until he died in 2014, founded the group. The band played a significant role in the birth and growth of the Cuban music styles of songo and timba.
The band's roster consists of the standard charanga instruments (flute, string instruments, and a rhythm section), plus trombones and, as the first charanga band, synthesizers and drum machines. Throughout their impressive career, the band has published over 40 studio albums.
On October 4, 2007, Havana D'Primera debuted as a performing Cuban Timba band. Alexander Abreu, the band's lead singer and lyricist, assembled the group of sixteen top musicians. The band has published several studio albums and a live CD, all critically acclaimed globally.
