Courtney Barnett Information
Courtney Melba Barnett (November 3, 1987) is an Australian singer, musician, and songwriter. She was born in Sydney and grew up in the Northern Beaches area of the city. Her family moved to Hobart when she was 16 years old. Barnett attended St Michael’s Collegiate School as well as the Tasmanian School of Art. She grew up listening to American bands. She also discovered Australian singer and songwriters Paul Kelly and Darren Hanlon. They inspired Barnett to start writing songs.
Barnett played the second guitar in Melbourne garage grunge band Rapid Transit from 2010 to 2011. The band released one self-titled album on cassette. She also recorded many early versions of her songs with the band named Courtney Barnett and the Olivettes. She also played lead guitar on the third studio album of Jen Cloher entitled, In Blood Memory, in 2013.
In 2015, Barnett was nominated in eight categories at the ARIA Music Awards of 2015. She won four trophies, including Best Cover Art, Best Independent Release, Best Female Artist, and Breakthrough Artist for her release, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. Barnett also appeared as the musical guest on the season finale of Saturday Night Live’s 41st season on May 21, 2016.
On May 18, 2018, Barnett released her second studio album entitled, Tell Me How You Really Feel. On November 12, 2021, she released her third studio album, Things Take Time, Take Time. In 2016, she was also nominated for Grammy Awards for the Best New Artist category.
