ConFunkShun Information
Con Funk Shun is an American funk and R&B band. The group's current lineup consists of Louis A. McCall Sr., Danny Thomas, Jark Fuller, Paul Harrell, Cedric Martin, Felton Pilate II, and Michael Cooper. They were formed in 1969 as "Project Soul" by high school friends Louis A. McCall Sr. (drums/percussion/vocals) and Michael Cooper (rhythm guitar/lead vocals), both originally from Vallejo, California. In 1971, the group featured Paul "Maceo" Harrell on woodwinds, trumpeter Karl Fuller, keyboardist Danny "Sweet Man" Thomas, and bassist Cedric Martin.
Soon after, lead vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Felton Pilate joined the band, completing the original lineup. The seven musicians got together in 1971 to start a new group; they named themselves "Con-Funk-Shun" after a song by the Nite-Liters' instrumental ensemble. In 1973, they moved to Memphis, Tennessee, after being hired as the backing band for the Soul Children, who were signed to Stax Records. After catching Estelle Axton's attention, they were signed to her "Fretone Records" label.
In 1973, they dropped their debut album, Organized Con Funk Shun. Louis's then-wife, publicist and marketer Linda Lou McCall, changed the band's name from "Confunkshun" to "Con Funk Shun" in 1975. In 1975, they made a performing tour of Japan. Con Funk Shun joined Mercury Records in 1976 and released eleven studio albums over the next decade. All four studio albums released by the band between 1977 and 1980 (Secrets, Loveshine, Candy, and Spirit of Love) were certified gold in the United States.
