Lonnie Rashid Lynn (March 13, 1972) is an American actor and rapper, professionally known by his stage name, Common. He was born in Chicago, Illinois. Lynn received a scholarship to Florida A&M University and majored in business administration for two years. He had a breakthrough in 1992 with the album Can I Borrow a Dollar?, and his 1994 album Resurrection received critical acclaim. Until the late 1990s, he had a sizable underground following. Through his work with the Soulquarians, he earned mainstream success.
Like Water for Chocolate (2000), Common's debut major-label album was a commercial triumph. For the Erykah Badu hit "Love of My Life," he won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Song in 2003. Likewise, his 2005 album Be was a financial success, earning him a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album in 2006.
For "Southside" (with Kanye West) from his 2007 album Finding Forever, Common won his second Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. Thisisme Then: The Best of Common, his best-of album, was released in late 2007.
Common founded his own record company, Think Common Entertainment, in 2011, after previously releasing music on labels including Relativity, Geffen, and GOOD Music. For his song "Glory," he co-wrote and sang with John Legend from the 2014 film Selma. He co-starred as Civil Rights Movement leader James Bevel and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2015. On the AMC western television series Hell on Wheels, he played Elam Ferguson.
