Maria Rosario Pilar Martinez Molina Baeza is a Spanish-American comedian, singer, flamenco guitarist, and actress. She was born in Murcia, Region of Murcia. She is professionally known as Charo. In her childhood, Charo’s grandmother hired a music professor who gave her weekly classical guitar lessons. She was discovered as a young performer by Xavier Cugat, who was a bandleader.
Charo appeared for the first time on the United States’ television on The Today Show. She, along with her husband Xavier Cugat, performed four times on The Ed Sullivan Show from 1965 to 1967. In 1968, Charo began appearing on Laugh-In. By 1971, she was headlining Vegas shows.
Throughout her career, Charo appeared on multiple television talk shows such as The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, The Mike Douglas Show, The John Davidson Show, The Captain and Tennille, Tony Orlando and Dawn, and Donny & Marie.
Charo made a guest appearance on Dancing with the Stars in April 2010. She also made an appearance on Watch What Happens: Live on February 22, 2011. Charo promoted her new song during this show entitled “Sexy! Sexy!”. She has also appeared as a celebrity guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag U Season 2’s fifth episode.
The notable studio albums that she has released so far in her career include Cuchi-Cuchi (1977), Ole Ole (1978), Bailando con Charo (1981), Guitar Passion (1994), Gusto (1997), and Charo and Guitar (2005). A few notable singles by her are Dance A Little Bit Closer (1977), Stay With Me (1979), Hot Love (1979), and a few more.
