Charles Mingus was a skilled bass player, accomplished pianist, bandleader, and composer; he was also one of the most influential individuals in 20th-century American music. He was born on a military installation in Nogales, Arizona, in 1922 and spent his childhood in Watts, California, where he was exposed to choral and group singing in the church and "heard Duke Ellington over the radio when [he] was eight years old." Through formal training, he learned the double bass and composition while absorbing the vernacular music of the great jazz masters through firsthand observation.
Beginning his career in the 1940s, he toured with artists including Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory, and Lionel Hampton. He eventually landed in New York, where he recorded and performed alongside such legends as Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Bud Powell, Art Tatum, and Duke Ellington. Mingus was one of the few bassists who also became a respected bandleader.
He was also a talented pianist who might have pursued that as a profession. In the middle of the 1950s, he established his own publishing and recording firms to safeguard and archive his expanding catalog of original compositions. In addition, he established the "Jazz Workshop," a venue for debuting composers to hear their compositions performed live and recorded.
