Charles Lloyd Information
Charles Lloyd (March 15, 1938) is an American jazz musician. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee. In addition to being Irish, he also has African, Cherokee, and Mongolian roots. At age nine, he was given a saxophone. He became engrossed with the music of Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Billie Holiday, and Duke Ellington, all featured on radio broadcasts in the 1940s. He studied under saxophone Irvin Reason and pianist Phineas Newborn, Jr. Booker Little, the trumpeter and one of his closest boyhood friends.
After Eric Dolphy left Chico Hamilton's band in 1960 to join Charles Mingus, he persuaded Lloyd to become musical director. Lloyd was soon joined by Hungarian guitarist Gábor Szabó, American bassist Albert "Sparky" Stinson, and British trombonist Charles Bohanan. Lloyd arranged and composed most of the music on Hamilton's albums, Impulse!, Passin' Thru, and Man from Two Worlds. When he wasn't touring with Hamilton, he worked with Nigerian percussionist Babatunde Olatunji.
Beginning in 1964, he was a member of the Cannonball Adderley Sextet alongside Nat Adderley, Joe Zawinul, Sam Jones, and Louis Hayes. He stayed with Cannonball Adderley for two years and says Adderley is largely responsible for his growth as a leader. Lloyd began his career as a recording artist and leader in 1964 when he signed with CBS Records. Charles Lloyd & the Marvels' third album, titled Tone Poem, was released by Blue Note in March 2021.
