Carrie - The Musical Information
Carrie is a musical that has music composed by Michael Gore, lyrics written by Dean Pitchford, and a book by Lawrence D. Cohen. It borrows plot points from the 1976 Brian De Palma film version and those from the 1974 Stephen King horror book. Margaret, Carrie White's repressive, religious fanatic mother, rules her isolated existence as the musical centers on the awkward adolescent girl with telekinetic abilities. After being embarrassed by her peers at the high school prom, she takes out her frustrations on everyone and everything she encounters.
The original Broadway production of Carrie, co-produced with the Royal Shakespeare Company, directed by Terry Hands and choreographed by Debbie Allen, premiered at the Virginia Theatre in April 1988 after pre-Broadway tryouts in Stratford-upon-Avon Royal Shakespeare Theatre in February and March. After 16 previews and five regular performances on Broadway, the production ended due to the generally unfavorable reviews it got. It is one of the most high-profile and costly flops in Broadway history, with a budget of $8 million.
Cohen, Pitchford, and Gore made nearly extensive revisions to the script and soundtrack before the 2012 Off-Broadway production debuted at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. Critics were more complimentary of the revival than they were of the original. Next year, license rights were made available for this version of the program, which became the official one. In 2018, The CW presented a musical episode of Riverdale that included the musical and featured revival renditions of the songs.
