Cab Calloway Orchestra Information
The Cab Calloway Orchestra, formerly based in Harlem (Cotton Club), is one of the most important and notable jazz bands in America. Cab Calloway was hired in 1930 to replace Duke Ellington at the Cotton Club. He recorded for Brunswick and the ARC dime store labels from 1930–1932. In 1940, the Cotton Club closed, and the Cab Calloway Orchestra went on the US tour under Cab Calloway.
The original lineup of the ensemble consists of Walter “Foots” Thomas and Thornton Blue on alto saxes; Earres Prince on piano; Andrew Brown on tenor sax; Jimmy Smith on tuba; Morris White on banjo; DePriest Wheeler on trombone; R. Q. Dickerson and Lammar Wright on trumpets; and Leroy Maxey on drums. The Cab Calloway Orchestra continues to delight its fans nationally straight from the “Birdland” club in New York City, the historic jazz club.
The orchestra performs in many other jazz clubs and venues scattered all over the country. The ensemble plays under the baton of Cab’s grandson C. Calloway Brooks. The legacy of the orchestra is being carried forward by Cab’s grandson after his death.
