Bye, Bye Birdie is a theater musical based on Michael Stewart's novel. It features music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Lee Adams. The play takes place in 1958 and was originally called Let's Go Steady. Elvis Presley's enlistment in the Army in 1957 impacted the script. "Conrad Birdie" is a pun on Conway Twitty, the rock star character. A late 1950s rock 'n' roll competitor of Presley, Twitty became a country music sensation.
The original 1960–1961 Broadway staging was bestowed Tony Awards. It was the basis for a 1963 film, a 1995 TV adaptation, a sequel, many big revivals, and a London play. The show's adaptability in terms of cast size and its heavy reliance on ensemble numbers made it a favorite among college and high school theater companies.
Following the early 2019 failure of Fox's Rent: Live and in addition to competing with the series finale of Game of Thrones and the season finale of American Idol, NBC scrapped their May 2018 announcement of intentions to screen a live performance of Hair. NBC plans to replace Hair with a family-friendly musical, and BBB might replace Hair if Lopez cooperates.
