Brian Setzer Information
Brian Robert Setzer (April 10, 1959) is a multi-talented American musician born in Massapequa, New York. He had a triumphant comeback in the early 1990s with the Brian Setzer Orchestra, a swing revival band, after enjoying enormous success in the early 1980s with the Stray Cats, a rockabilly ensemble reminiscent of the 1950s. He appeared in the 1987 film La Bamba as Eddie Cochran.
Setzer started a solo career after the Stray Cats broke up in 1984, playing as a sideman for bands like Robert Plant's Honeydrippers. He veered away from rockabilly, and toward rhythm and blues (R&B) and John Mellencamp's heartland rock on his debut solo album, The Knife Feels Like Justice (EMI, 1986).
Jump Blues by Louis Prima was Setzer's return to his beloved 1950s music. In contrast, the 1980s saw his revival of rockabilly. An album cover of Prima's "Jump, Jive an' Wail" from The Dirty Boogie (Interscope, 1998) by the seventeen-piece Brian Setzer Orchestra gained widespread notice. Grammy winners included the duo or group performing the song with vocals and the album's "Sleep Walk" for best pop instrumental performance.
Among the classical compositions that Setzer performed were Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5" and "Für Elise" from the 2007 CD Wolfgang's Big Night Out. Best Classical Crossover Album was the category for which Setzer was nominated for his ninth Grammy, Wolfgang.
Setzer announced his first solo album in seven years, Gotta Have the Rumble, in 2021.
