Brad spent much of his adolescence in Denver listening to live jazz at various locations while studying the saxophone. One of these was called "El Chapultapec," and it belonged to Jerry Krantz. Krantz was a huge jazz fan who encouraged up-and-coming performers like Brad to sit in and take notes. Billy Tolles, Billy Wallace, Homer Brown, Nat Yarborough, and other local luminaries were among the first people Brad ever heard speak. Other jazz legends like trumpeter Clark Terry and saxophonist Eddie "Cleanhead" Vincent were also on hand for him to observe and learn from.
Leali attended North Texas University, was a member of the One O'clock Lab Band, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in music instruction in 1989. After he finished school, he was quickly picked up by the Harry Connick, Jr. Orchestra. Brad was the orchestra's principal alto saxophonist and musical director throughout his time there (1989–1994). During that time, the orchestra released two albums that were critically acclaimed and went on a world tour.
In 1995, at Frank Foster's request, Brad became a member of the Count Basie Orchestra. (completed later under Grover Mitchell, 2003). The Basie band, which he participated in, won two Grammys during his stay with them. In terms of musical education, it was unparalleled. He gained a deeper understanding of the significance of this music through his work with seasoned musicians. In those formative years, it was vital to have one-on-one interactions with influential people like Joe Williams.
