Boney James Information
Boney James (September 1, 1961) is an American record producer, songwriter, and saxophonist. Boney was born in Lowell, Massachusetts. At the age of eight, he took clarinet and kept playing it until he turned ten and switched his instrument to sax. Spending his early teens in New Rochelle, New York, he was influenced by saxophonist Grover Washington Jr. and R&B Motown. James’ family moved to Los Angeles when he was fourteen years old. There he joined a fusion band who used to open acts for Yellowjackets and Flora Purim.
After receiving his degree from UCLA in History, Boney began playing full-time music. In 1985, he learned the keyboard and joined the band of Morris Day. Boney released his debut album in 1992 called “Trust.” It was recorded on the independent record label named “Spindletop Records.” In 1994, Boney was signed by the Warner Bros label. Under the label, he released his Record Gold Certified songs by RIAA, including Sweet Thing, Body Language, and Seduction.
Boney collaborated with Rick Braun (trumpeter) for the album “Shake It Up” in 2000. Many artists have made a guest appearance on the Boney’s records, including Faith Evens, Angie Stone, George Duke, Al Jarreau, Philip Bailey, and several others. He also co-produced his records with Brown, beginning in 1997. He switched himself to Concord Records in 2006. He produced two songs, a tributing album for George Duke, under the label Al Jarreau. The album entitled “My Old Friend.”
Boney has released many albums, including Ride (2001), Pure (2004), Christmas Present (2007), Send One Your Love (2009), and several others. Boney has been nominated in the Grammy Awards for Four times in his career and won the Soul Train Award for the category of “Best Jazz Album 1998”.
