Robert McElhiney James is an American jazz keyboardist, record producer, and arranger born in Marshall, Missouri. He is professionally known as Bob James. He has founded the band called “Fourplay” and wrote the theme song for the television show, Taxi, “Angela.” He began playing the piano at four years old when Sister Mary Elizabeth, his first piano teacher, discovered that James had a perfect pitch.
After learning music from several tutors, Bob James eventually started his professional career and acquired his first job when he was eight years old. He played for a tap dance class at Mercy Academy. James was playing with free jazz in Ann Arbor and Detroit while in college at Michigan. James’ band entered, and won, the Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival in 1962 with Quincy Jones and Henry Mancini as judges.
In the 1970s, James was invited by Creed Taylor to record a solo album entitled “One,” released in 1974. It contained the hit song “Feel Like Making Love.” The album was notable as it adopted classical music to a modern-day scene. James has worked with many record labels such as CTI Records, Warner Bros Records, Koch Records, Columbia Records, and Tappan Zee Records. As a leader of the band, James has released several notable albums such as Bold Conceptions (1963), Urban Flamingo (2006), Angels of Shanghai (2007), and Alone (2013).
