Blackie and the Rodeo Kings Information
Blackie and the Rodeo Kings is a Canadian folk rock-alternative country band. The current lineup of the group consists of Stephen Fearing, Colin Linden, and Tom Wilson, further accompanied by John Dymond (bass), Gary Craig (drums), and John Whynot (keyboardS). The band was formed in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1996. The band’s name was taken from the 1978 album of Bennett entitled Blackie and the Rodeo King. The band started as a side project, but the group members decided to pursue it full-time after its success.
Blackie and the Rodeo Kings saw their critical success after releasing their first album, High or Hurtin’: The Songs of Willie P. Bennett. The band recorded another album in 1999 entitled Kings of Love. The album received Juno Award for Best Roots & Traditional Album – Group in 2000. Originally, the band has performed at such venues as the Black Sheep Inn in Wakefield, Quebec.
Blackie and the Rodeo Kings were winners of the 7th annual Independent Music Awards Vox Pop that Michael WryCraft designed. In 2011, the band teamed for its upcoming album, Kings, and Queens, with Patti Scialfa, Serena Ryder, Cassandra Wilson, Rosanne Cash, Lucinda Williams, Pam Tillis, and Emmylou Harris.
Other albums released by Blackie and the Rodeo Kings include Bark (2003), Let’s Frolic (2006), Let’s Frolic Again (2007), Swinging from the Chains of Love (2009), Kings and Queens (2011), South (2014), Kings and kings (2017), and King of This Town (2020).
