Black Violin Information
Black Violin is an American hip-hop band from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Kevin Sylvester and Wilner Baptiste are professionally trained string musicians who go by the stage names Kev Marcus and Wil B. play the viola, while Kevin Marcus plays the Violin.
The name "Black Violin" was inspired by Stuff Smith's record of the same name, who plays jazz violin. Sylvester met Sam G., the future manager of his and G. R. E. M.'s, at Florida International University. They soon became famous at local bars by doing a set of hip-hop covers on Violin. The duo sent a recording to Showtime at the Apollo. Two years later, they were asked to perform, where they promptly won and kept winning.
Black Violin's reputation has soared with their appearance accompanying Alicia Keys at the 2004 Billboard Awards and by appearing on the same bill with some of the industry's most outstanding performers. Some notable names include Wu-Tang Clan and Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park.
In addition to being musicians, the two guys have worked as producers and songwriters for artists including Kanye West, Tom Petty, Lupe Fiasco, and Aerosmith. DJ SPS and percussionist Nat Stokes often join the pair in their live shows.
