Biz Markie (April 8, 1964) is an American actor, beatboxer, DJ, rapper, spokesperson, television personality, and comedian. He is known for his 1989 single “Just a Friend.” The single became a Top 40 hit in several countries. “Just a Friend” has also made into the #100 the VH1’s list of the 100 greatest hip-hop songs of all time as well as became his most successful single by reaching at #9 on the Billboard Chart. He lives in Howard County, Maryland. Markie is also called the “Clown Prince of Hip Hop.”
He started his career on Long Island. In 1986, he was interviewed for the cult documentary entitled “Big Fun in the Big Town.” In 1988, his first album, “Goin’ Off” was released and attracted a huge amount of his early fans. The attention was mainly due to the single he released inside the album title “Make the Music With Your Mouth, Biz.” The underground hits that were also featured by the album were “Pickin’ Boogers” and “Vapors.”
He released his second studio album on October 10, 1989, named “The Biz Never Sleeps.” On August 27, 1991, Markie released his third studio album, “I Need a Haircut.” It was on Cold Chillin’/Warner Bros Records and was produced by Markie himself. Gilbert O’Sullivan served his cousin Cool V. Markie a lawsuit as he claimed that “Alone Again” of the album was an unauthorized sample from his hit “Alone Again (Naturally).” Due to all of these unfortunate circumstances, the sales were very low for the album.
Biz Markie further released two more albums named “All Samples Cleared!” in 1993, and “Weekend Warrior” in 2003. He appeared as a star guest in the “Spongebob Squarepants” episode “Kenny the Cat.” He also appeared in Sharknado 2: The Second One, the Syfy network movie in 2014. His single “Just a Friend” got featured in the series “Love” of Netflix.
