Billy Childs Information
William Edward Childs (March 8, 1957) is an American jazz pianist, conductor, arranger, and composer. He was born in Los Angeles, California. He attended the Community School of the Performing Arts at the age of sixteen, sponsored by the University of Southern California. Childs studied piano with John Weisenfluh and music theory with Marienne Uszler. He also attended the University of Southern California from 1975 to 1979. He received a degree from there in composition.
In 1977, Childs made his recording debut along with the J. J. Johnson Quintet while they were on their tour to Japan. The most fruitful time of the beginning of Childs’ career was when he played in the group of Freddie Hubbard. His early musical influences include Chick Corea, Keith Emerson, and Herbie Hancock. As a composer, Igor Stravinsky, Maurice Ravel, and Paul Hindemith inspired him the most.
In 1988, Childs started his solo jazz career after releasing, Take, for Example, This…, the album was one of the first four critically acclaimed albums on Windham Hill Jazz. As an arranger, Childs has worked for notable artists such as Claudia Acuna, Phil Ramone, David Foster, Michael Buble, Glady’s Knight, Chris Botti, Yo-Yo Ma, and Sting.
In 2015, Childs won the Grammy Award for Best Arrangement, Instrument, and Vocals and in 2018 for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. Some of his notable studio albums are Twilight Is Upon Us (1989), His April Touch (1991), Portrait of a Player (1993), I’ve Known Rivers (1995), Child Within (1996), Skim Coat (1999), and Bedtime Stories (2000).
