Washington, D.C., has produced its fair share of ground-breaking black musical acts. Famous musicians, including Duke Ellington, Chuck Brown, Marvin Gaye, Shirley Horn, Roberta Flack, Bad Brains, Meshell Ndegeocello, Wale, and Oddisee, are on that list. Ben Williams now joins that hall-of-fame company. Williams has been one of the most celebrated and adaptable bassists in contemporary jazz for over a decade. He took first place at the 2009 International Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition.
Pat Metheny, George Benson, Stefon Harris, David Sanborn, Lauryn Hill, Wynton Marsalis, Robert Glasper, Maxwell, and Nicholas Payton shared the stage or recorded with him. Williams has been honored as a Rising Star in Bass by the DownBeat Magazine Critics Poll on two occasions (2013, 2015). When Williams took home the top prize at the 2009 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Bass Competition, he was officially labeled a "Rising Star" and signed with Concord Records.
State of Art, recorded with his band Sound Effect in 2011, was released a year later. The album topped the charts on both iTunes and the National BillBoard, and it was given a 4.5-star review in DownBeat. The jazz section of iTunes named him their Breakthrough Artist of the Year for 2011.
