Ben Watt Information
Benjamin Brian Thomas Watt (December 6, 1962) is a musician, author, DJ, remixer, producer, singer, songwriter, and radio presenter from Marylebone, London. He grew up in Barnes, as the son of Scottish jazz bandleader and arranger Tommy Watt. Watt may be best known for being one half of the duo Everything but the Girl. His music is defined as Alternative rock, new wave, house, electronica, and folk-rock.
Watt started his career in 1981 when he recorded on the indie label Cherry Red. The first single by him was 'Cant,' which was released in June 1981. It was followed by his second release entitled Summer into Winter, which was a 1982's 5-track EP. North Marine Drive was the debut album by Watt, released in 1983. The album hit the top 10 on the UK Independent Album Charts.
Watt joined the duo Everything but the Girl (EBTG) with vocalist Tracey Thorn, along with whom he recorded and wrote for approximately 17 years. Together the two created nine studio albums. The duo earned eight gold and one platinum album BPI Certifications in the UK, as well as one gold album RIAA Certification in the US.
As a DJ and recording artist/producer, Watt recorded some of the notable club tracks such as A Stronger Man, Lone Cat (Holding On), Outspoken EP Part 1, Pop A Cap in Yo' Ass, Just a Blip, and Guinea Pig. Solo studio albums by him include Hendra (2014), Fever Dream (2016), and Storm Damage (January 2020). He also founded the online Buzzin' Fly radio show in 2006. Later, Watt accepted an invitation to move to BBC Radio 6 Music's flagship electronic radio show, where he worked as a resident DJ on the 6 Mix until 2014.
