Ata Kak Information
Ata Kak (September 29, 1960) is a Ghanaian hip-house and producer. After relocating to Toronto in 1989, he began working as a chef and music instructor at a church while becoming a member and songwriter for the highlife band Marijata. After two years, he decided to leave the band, buy used equipment, and start a music project with a friend in their Ontario apartment.
His primary musical influences were funk, reggae, and the high life, but he was also influenced by the likes of Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, the Bee Gees, and Elvis Presley. Probably the first performer ever since Ghana's nascent hip-hop movement rapped in English, he began rapping in his native Twi language after seeing a performance by Hip -hop pioneers Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five.
Worldwide, people are raving about the 2015 re-release of Obaa Sima, and the album has been featured in numerous publications and on various radio and television programs. The re-release was so successful that Yaw, with the help of Shimkovitz and an agent, went on tour in 2016 with other London-based musicians. In an interview with FACT, he stated his intention to record new material following the tour, with higher-quality gear and a full band. A documentary titled Ata Kak - Time Bomb was released in 2017 by the Red Bull Music Academy.
