Arooj Aftab Information
Arooj Aftab (March 11, 1985) is an American-Pakistani producer, vocalist, and music composer based in Brooklyn. She works in various musical styles, including neo-Sufi, minimalism, jazz, and other idioms.
Aftab was born in Saudi Arabia to Pakistani parents who had relocated there. They moved back to Lahore, Pakistan, when she was about ten years old. She taught herself the guitar and developed her vocal style by listening to Billie Holiday, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Mariah Carey, and Begum Akhtar. Aftab was living in a country where access to Western online platforms was limited, and the infrastructure for independent music was inadequate at the time. However, in this setting, she would promote her music in Pakistan as one of the first musicians to use the internet in the early 2000s; Aftab’s covers of “Hallelujah” and “Mera Pyaar” went successful, launching the Pakistani indie scene.
Bird Under Water, Aftab’s first album, was released independently in 2014. David Honigmann of the Financial Times scored the album four out of five stars in March 2015, and it gained critical acclaim.
Siren Islands, Aftab’s second album, was released on June 12, 2018, by New Amsterdam Records. The album was named NPR’s “Favorite Electronic and Dance Music of 2018” list. “Island No. 2” was included in the New York Times’ “25 Best Classical Music Tracks of 2018” list. The song “Lullaby,” from Bird Under Water, was voted number 150 on NPR’s “200 Greatest Songs By 21st Century Women” list in mid-July 2018.
