Antibalas Information
Antibalas is a Brooklyn-based American afrobeat band inspired by Fela Kuti's Africa 70 and Eddie Palmieri's Harlem River Drive Orchestra. Afrobeat is the overarching framework and language of their music, but they also mix jazz, funk, dub, improvised music, and the traditional drumming of Cuba and West Africa. After being created in 1998 by Martn Perna as "Conjunto Antibalas," the band debuted on May 26, 1998, at St. Nicks Pub in Harlem at a poetry night hosted by acclaimed visual artist Xaviera Simmons.
In the following months, the band's core of eleven members consolidated, and they recorded more of their material. Before landing a Friday night residency at the now-defunct NoMoore in August 1999, the band only played in non-commercial venues like block parties, lofts, and public parks throughout their first year together. From August 1999 until April 2001, the club hosted a residency called Africalia!, but fire officials shut it down as part of the Giuliani administration's assault on nightclubs and lounges.
Gabriel Roth, guitarist, producer, and engineer, was responsible for the creation of the first three albums and the composition of a number of their songs. Antibalas has played venues ranging from Carnegie Hall and Central Park Summerstage to Rikers Island prison in New York City and 35 other nations.
