Alexis P. Suter Information
Alexis P. Suter (February 15, 1963) is an American soul blues and blues singer and songwriter. She was born in Brooklyn, New York. She first started singing in church when she was four years old, and by the time she was ten, she had already met the Mills Brothers and seen them in concert. In school, she discovered her talent for playing the sousaphone, and later, through visiting several churches in her area, she learned more about gospel music.
She was also influenced by Ruth Brown, whose programs her family listened to on the radio. Suter said that her mother's experience as a backup singer for such artists as Mahalia Jackson, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Harry Belafonte, Mavis Staples, and Dionne Warwick served as a musical inspiration for her work. In 1990, Suter released her first single, "Slam Me, Baby," which was recorded in a dance music context and ultimately led to her signing with Epic/Sony Records as the label's first African American female artist. The song eventually ended up on a compilation album called Live & Remastered, released years after the original recording.
After that, she joined Hipbone Records and dropped her first album, Shuga Fix, in 2005. Levon Helm noticed her and her band the same year, and they were invited to play at his Midnight Rambles in Woodstock, New York. Hipbone Records released her third studio album, Just Another Fool 2008. Ted Kooshian played piano as part of a special guest performance.
