Alex Moxon, an established guitarist on the Ottawa jazz scene, has developed his style as an improviser and composer for over a decade. Alex Moxon Quartet is his first album as a bandleader and features his original sound and compositions.
Alex's son Fraser was born during the album's creation. Therefore, the album's theme is birth and rebirth in two senses: the birth of a new family member and Alex's transition from supporting player to frontman. The song is filled with the urgency and anticipation of this new phase in his life.
Because Fraser's due date was December 22 (making him a Capricorn), the album opens with Woody Shaw's "In A Capricornian Way," a song chosen for its artistic merits and out of respect for its author. Even in the middle of the unpredictability of the Covidian Era, the wonder and optimism for the future are palpable in works like "Piety in Crescent Park," inspired by an afternoon spent in Crescent Park, New Orleans.
Ottawa residents Steve Boudreau (piano), John Geggie (bass), and Michel Delage (drums) back up Moxon on the album. As they have all worked collectively and in split configurations over the years, they have the synergy that can only be earned from a history of playing together.
