Abdullah Ibrahim (October 9, 1934) is a South African composer and pianist. He was born in Cape Town, South Africa. Born and raised in the multiethnic port regions of Cape Town, his music draws from various sources, including traditional African songs, AME Church gospel, Ragas, and even modern jazz and other Western styles.
When talking about the subgenre of jazz known as Cape jazz, Ibrahim is the most important person. His jazz compositions show the influence of Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington. His jazz composition "Mannenberg" is widely recognized as a powerful protest song against apartheid. When apartheid was in full swing in South Africa in the 1960s, Ibrahim fled to New York City, where he resided until the early 1990s.
He has performed at many of the world's most prestigious locations throughout his career, and his musical partners have included such luminaries as Max Roach, Carlos Ward, Randy Weston, and European classical orchestras. With his jazz singer wife, Sathima Bea Benjamin, he is the father of two children: Jean Grae, an underground rapper in New York City, and Tsakwe.
