The Mayan Theater is a landmark former movie palace, music venue, and current nightclub located in Los Angeles, California. The venue opened for the public on August 15, 1927. It has a seating capacity of 1,700. Stiles O. Clements designs the architecture of the nightclub. The venue was rented out by Leon Hefflin Sr. to produce the Sweet N’ Hot, “Greatest Negro All-Star Musical to Hit Coast.’ The show ran for about 11 weeks and was covered by 20 different newspapers from all over the nation.
Pornographic filmmaker Carlos Tobalina owned the Mayan Theater from 1971 to 1989. As such, the venue showed pornographic films in the 1980s. Later on, the theater was the favorite location featured in many films. Some of the notable ones are The Bodyguard, Save the Tiger, Sally of the Scandals, A Night at the Roxbury, Unlawful Entry, and Rock’ n’ Roll High School. The nightclub can also be seen in the eighth episode of the first season of GLOW.
The Mayan Theater was converted into a music venue and a nightclub in 1990, with most of its lavish ornament intact. The venue is now designated as a Historic-Cultural Monument. It is the prototypical example of the late 1920s, many excessively ornate exotic revival-style theaters.
