Proctors Theatre was a former vaudeville house located at State Street, Schenectady, New York. The theatre was built in 1914. It opened to the general public on December 27, 1926. The venue closed its doors, which were later reopened in 1980. It has a seating capacity of 3,250 people approximately. Thomas W. Lamb designed the architecture of the theatre. Proctors Theatre is under the ownership of Arts Center and Theatre of Schenectady. It is a three-story building with an attic. The theatre has one of the most massive movie screens in the North East. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the year 1979. Proctors Theatre won the Outstanding Historic Theatre Award on July 18, 2009.
Stranded in Paris was the first silent film that was shown on the opening day of the venue. Four years later, after its opening, the Proctors hosted its very first public demonstration of television where an orchestra was performed. Several well-known artists have performed at the Proctors Theatre notably, Mariah Carey, whose 1993 top-rated Thanksgiving Special was recorded at the venue. Other than these Britney Spears, George Burns, Hal Holbrook, Ted Wiles, and many others have also performed shows at the Proctors Theatre.
