The Pendleton Round-Up is a major annual rodeo that takes place in Pendleton, Oregon. The rodeo was first established in 1910. It is organized at the Pendleton Round-Up Stadium. The event takes place during the second full week of September on an annual basis. Roughly around 50,000 people attend the rodeo every year. The official capacity of the event is 17,000. It is a prominent member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). In 2008, the Pendleton Round-Up was inducted by the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It was also incorporated as a 501(c)(4) not-for-profit organization, as the “Northwestern Frontier Exhibition Association” on July 29, 1910. The event is said to be a creation of local ranchers that Herman Rosenberg exclusively leads.
The Pendleton Round-Up earned the PRCA Large Outdoor Rodeo of the Year award seven times. In 1929, Bronc rider Bonnie McCarroll died during the rodeo. As a result of her death, no initial events were scheduled by the newly formed PRCA. In total, the Pendleton Round-Up features ten events. Cowboys and girls in Barrel Racing from all across the US and Canada arrive to compete. The competitors who win the maximum amount of money are awarded the All-Around Cowboy. They need to win in Barrel racing, Bareback riding, Saddle bronc riding, Steer roping, Calf roping, Brahma bull riding, Team roping, Indian relay races, Steer wrestling, and Wild cow milking.
The Pendleton Round-Up starts with an extreme run-in on flag bearers’ horseback, including the Flag of Oregon, the Flag of Canada, the Flag of the United States, and the flag of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Wayne Brooks is the current announcer of the Pendleton Round-Up. Dusty Tuckness and Tim O’Conner are the bullfighters.
