New Orleans Fair Grounds, also known as Fair Grounds Race Course, is a thoroughbred racetrack and racino located in New Orleans, Louisiana. The venue opened for the public in 1893. It is under the ownership of Churchill Downs Louisiana Horseracing Company, LLC. and operated by the same. New Orleans Fair Grounds was ranked #12 of the fifteen according to the rating system introduced by the Horseplayers Association of North America (2009). According to the ranking, the venue was ranked behind Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, Louisiana, which was on number 6. The track was given several names in the past, including the “Union Race Course” in 1852, the “Creole Race Course” in 1859, and the “Fair Grounds” in 1863.
New Orleans Fair Grounds was closed when the Metairie Course reopened after the great war. When Colonel Matt Winn arrived in New Orleans in 1907, he planned to establish racing dates and deal with other matters. The racing was banned in 1908, but it returned to New Orleans in 1915. New Orleans Fair Grounds was used for an auto race in 1921. It was the only car race that ever took place at the track. The track resumed proper racing after WWII, officially established in 1971.
Hurricane Katrina heavily damaged New Orleans Fair Grounds, and it was closed for one whole year. It was reopened in 2006, on Thanksgiving Day. Some of the well-known TV personalities who have appeared on the track include Donna Barton Brothers (1999–2002), Mike Diliberto (1990–2005), Katie Mikolay (2010-2013), and Brian W. Spencer (2013–2017).
