Navy Pier Tickets Information
Navy Pier is a 3,300-foot-long pier located on the shoreline of Lake Michigan in Chicago, Illinois. The venue was built in 1916, and Charles S. Frost and E.C. Shankland did the architecture. Navy Pier encompasses over 50 acres (20 ha) of parks, shops, restaurants, gardens, family attractions, and exhibition facilities. It is said to be the top destination in the Midwestern US. The venue is known for drawing nearly two million visitors on an annual basis. It is also one of the most visited attractions in the entire Midwest. Navy Pier is Chicago's second most visited tourist attraction currently. The venue was added to the NRHP on September 13, 1979.
Navy Pier was originally known as the "Municipal Pier." Built by Charles Sumner Frost, a nationally known architect, the venue's design is based on the 1909 Plan of Chicago by Edward H. Bennett and Daniel Burnham. The venue's original purpose was to serve as a dock for freights, indoor and outdoor recreation, passenger traffic, and events like expositions and pageants. The pier was also used as a jail for draft dodgers in mid-1918. The pier was given the current name in honor of the naval veterans who served in World War I. The venue was turned into a training center for the United States Navy during WWII.
Navy Pier underwent upgrades for the 21st century on January 13, 2006. After much development and renovation, Navy Pier is now full of outdoor and indoor attractions. Some of the notable outdoor attractions at the Navy Pier Park are the Pepsi Wave Swinger, Remote Control Boats, Light Tower Ride, and the Carousel.
