It serves as the home field to the University of Michigan football team, Wolverines. The venue is the world’s second-largest stadium. The stadium was inaugurated for the general public on October 1, 1927, at a construction cost of $950,000. The current seating capacity of the stadium is around 107,601 people. It is owned and operated by the University of Michigan. The architecture of the stadium was designed by Bernard L. Green. It underwent a significant renovation in 2010.
Michigan played its first game at the Michigan Stadium on October 1, 1927, against Ohio Wesleyan. On September 7, 2013, the stadium achieved its highest attendance record of 115,109 people, when Michigan played against Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The venue also hosts the University of Michigan's graduation ceremonies. President Lyndon B. Johnson launched his Great Society program at the 1964 commencement ceremony. On November 4, 2006, Michigan played against the Ball State University, which was the 200th consecutive crowd of more than 100,000 fans. The Michigan lacrosse program was hosted at the stadium from 2011- 2012. The venue has also hosted the 2014 NHL Winter Classic, 2014 International Champions Cup soccer match, and the 1984 Olympics Gold Medal match.
