Magness Arena is a famous multi-purpose collegiate sports arena that is located in Denver, Colorado. The venue began construction in April 1997 and officially opened for the public on September 15, 1999. The architecture of the building is designed by Davis Partnership Architects and Sink Combs Dethlefs. It has a seating capacity of up to 8,000. The arena is owned and operated by the University of Denver. During its planning and construction, the venue was given the name the University of Denver Auditorium. The arena was built as part of the Daniel L. Ritchie Center, located at the University of Denver as a sports complex.
Magness Arena serves as the home venue to the Denver Pioneers ice hockey and basketball teams. It was voted "Best New Sports Venue" in 2000 by Westword. The arena was named in honor of the cable television pioneer named Bob Magness, who also donated $10 million to construct the venue. The arena features two members-only club seating areas, padded individual seating, a concourse with glassed-in views of the adjoining El Pomar Natatorium, Hamilton Gymnasium, and a four-sided video scoreboard.
Magness Arena can be easily identified around the city by the gold-spired Williams Tower, which is 215-foot-tall. The attached tower contains a 65-bell carillon. The largest hockey crowd recorded was in 2012 between Colorado College and Denver. Around 6,207 fans attended the match. The 2008 presidential campaign rally for Barack Obama was the largest non-hockey event hosted by the venue with around 10,000 people. The arena also hosted the first of three 2012 U.S. Presidential Debates that were held in 2012.
