Curran Theatre is an indoor theatre located at 445 Geary Street, San Francisco. The Curran Theatre has a seating capacity of approximately 1,667. It first opened to the general public in February 1922. The theatre was named after the former owner, Homer Curran. Currently, it is owned by Carole Shorenstein Hays. The theatre was initially used as Shuburt House that later showcased for the Theatre Guild Presentations. The Curran Theatre was temporarily closed for renovations in September 2015 and reopened on January 25, 2017.
The Curran Theatre hosted more Pre-Broadway engagements than any other theatre in San Francisco. It also hosted five years of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom Of The Opera,” which was the most significant domestic run. Broadway scenes from the film “All About Eve” were also shot at the theatre in 1950. A television series “The Streets of San Francisco” filmed an episode in the Curran Theatre.
The Curran Theatre has a golden history of Broadway productions which include Magdalen: A Musical Adventure 1948, Carnival in Florida 1953, Home Sweet Home 1975, Oliver 1962, Three Wishes of Jamie 1951, Fences 1987, Gigi 1973, Brighton Beach Memoir 1983, Biloxi Blues 1985, Lennon 2006, Ring of Fire 2006, Hugh Jackman 2011, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical 2013, Head Over Heels, and Soft Power in 2018.
