Zoltan Takacs Information
Toxinologist and tropical explorer of Hungarian descent, Zoltán Takács is an expert on venomous snakes and their venoms. He has been named an "Emerging Explorer" by National Geographic.
Takacs earned a doctorate in pharmacology from Columbia University. When he was a professor at the University of Chicago, he collaborated in developing the designer toxin technique, which involves the production of several versions of an animal toxin and searching for those that bind to a therapeutic target. His other primary topic of study is the phenomenon of poison resistance in snakes like cobras and sea snakes.
Takacs received the National Geographic Society's Research and Exploration award and was an Earth Institute Fellow at Columbia University. He has been in numerous snake films, including those on the National Geographic Channel and PBS's NOVA. Takacs is a world traveler who has been to 133 different countries, as well as a pilot, scuba diver, and wildlife photographer.
