Yakov Smirnoff Information
Yakov Naumovich Pokhis (January 24, 1951) is a Ukrainian-American actor, comedian, and writer. He is better known as Yakov Smirnoff and was born in Odessa, Ukrainian SSR. As a comedian, he entertained on ships in the Black Sea while teaching when he came across some Americans who introduced him to life in the United States. From that point, he started considering leaving his country and moving to the United States.
In the late 1970s, Smirnoff had already moved to the United States and began doing stand-up comedy. He chose the name Smirnoff because he believed Americans would be more familiar with this. In the 1980s, he moved to Los Angeles, where he began pursuing his comedy career further. He often appeared at the renowned Comedy Store. Smirnoff worked hard, and within a short period, he achieved a significant level of success in the comedy industry.
Smirnoff was invited to a party in 1987 hosted by the Washington Times editor-in-chief, Arnaud de Borchgrave. The party also featured President Ronald Reagan as the guest of honor. Later on, Smirnoff was chosen as the featured entertainer at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner in 1988.
Smirnoff received a breakthrough for his career when he appeared for a small role in Moscow’s film on the Hudson in 1984. He has appeared in a few more hit films, including Heartburn (1986), The Money Pit (1986), What a Country (1987), Night Court (1990), and The Adventures of Buckaroo Across the 8th Dimension (1984).
