What the Constitution Means to Me is an American play by Heidi Schreck. It was written in 2017. On March 31, 2019, the drama opened on Broadway at the Hayes Theater, starring Schreck herself. Schreck touches on women's rights, immigration, domestic abuse, and American history throughout the play. Schreck shifts the play's chronological period, acting in some scenes as her present self and others as her fifteen-year-old self competing in Constitutional debate competitions. The Constitution Means to Me has won honors such as a Tony Award nomination for Best Play and a slot on the 2019 Pulitzer Prize finalist list.
What the Constitution Means to Me premiered at the Wild Project at Summerworks, Clubbed Thumb's (New York City) festival for new plays, in a co-production with True Love Productions in June and July 2017. The drama explores immigration issues about Schreck's family's past, notably her great-grandmother, who immigrated to the United States after being purchased as a wife in a magazine.
From May 3 to June 17, 2018, the play was performed at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in Berkeley, California. Danny Wolohan played the moderator "Danny" while Oliver Butler directed the film. The play has been nominated for several awards and honors, such as the Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Play (Off-Broadway) (2019), Drama League Awards for Distinguished Performance Award, and Outstanding Production of a Broadway or Off-Broadway Play (2019), and several others. In 2021, the play has also been nominated for the Producers Guild of America Awards for Outstanding Producer of Streamed or Televised Motion Pictures.
