Washington Ballet Information
The Washington Ballet (TWB) consists of professional ballet dancers. It is based in the nation's capital. Mary Day established it in 1976, and Julie Kent has been its director since 2016. The school's pre-professional dance company used to perform in the 1950s with the National Symphony Orchestra at venues like the National Cathedral and the District of Columbia Department of Recreation. In 1956, the troupe played in the Dominican Republic alongside Alicia Alonso and toured New York and West Virginia.
Goh Choo San, a promising dancer and choreographer from the Dutch National Ballet (who served as resident choreographer and then associate artistic director), had three pieces performed in the company's inaugural season. The Washington Ballet had full seasons in the nation's capital and went on tour to South America, China, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Russia, and Spain in the '80s and '90s.
Goh choreographed 19 ballets for The Washington Ballet between his tenure there and his death in November 1987. After Mary Day retired as head of the school in 2003, she resigned in 1999 as the firm's creative director. Unfortunately, she passed away in 2006.
The Washington Ballet's artistic director since 1999 is Septime Webre, a Cuban-American. Juanita y Alicia (2000), Carmen (2001), Journey Home (2002), Cinderella (2003), Oui/Non (2006), State of Wonder (2006), Carmina Burana, Fluctuating Hemlines, Where the Wild Things Are, and Peter Pan are among Webre's popular works that the Washington Ballet has commissioned.
