Virginia Opera Information
In 1974, a group of dedicated volunteers from the Norfolk, Virginia, community came together to form Virginia Opera, an opera company located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 1975, the company held its inaugural performance. Over the next forty years, it gained national renown for its innovative and diverse education and outreach programs, musical and dramatic integrity, presentation of the best young artists, and inventiveness.
With over 30 shows and almost 50,000 attendees every season, the business has an annual budget of $5 million. In March 1994, the Virginia General Assembly unanimously designated Virginia Opera as the Official Opera Company of the Commonwealth of Virginia as a mark of appreciation for its service to the state and the operatic world.
Currently, four major Virginia venues—the Norfolk Harrison Opera House, the Virginia Beach Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, Fairfax's Center for the Arts, and Richmond's Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage—host Virginia Opera's four annual productions. Every year, Virginia Opera's groundbreaking Education and Outreach Program reaches over 150,000 students and community people, making it the only opera company to perform a full season of operas in various mainstage locations.
