Tony Williams had an illustrious dance career. Tony's transformation into the Boston Ballet's first African-American principal dancer cleared the way for a manner of living that would shape his social perspective for the rest of his life. When Tony was taken into the Boston Ballet fold in 1960 to develop his evident skill, access to an art education supplied that crucial first spark.
Tony had a vision of employing a dance education paradigm to bring Boston's varied populations together due to his experiences. He noticed that bringing young people together to relate to artistic expression elicited empathy, mentorship, and leadership traits. The medium was art. Tony created a reworking of the Nutcracker to represent this. Tony created the Urban Nutcracker by making it a Boston story and brilliantly fusing classical ballet with dances from different cultures.
The Urban Nutcracker's run was extended in the following years, and it was moved from the Strand Theatre (during its refurbishment) to the Wheelock Family Theatre and then to the Back Bay Events Center, where it is now. Tony is never satisfied with a run of 15 performances for his production. Every inch achieved equates to miles of dreaming. The message of the Urban Nutcracker, which offers community discount programs and an autism-friendly production, is that access is still important. "Access" is never a buzzword for the Urban Nutcracker; it is real business. Meanwhile, the critics are raving.
