Turandot Information
Giacomo Puccini composed Turandot, a three-act opera with lyrics written by Renato Simoni and Giuseppe Adami in Italian. The opera was presented in 1926 after Franco Alfano posthumously completed the music, as Puccini left it unfinished when he died in 1924. Set in China, the opera tells the story of Prince Calaf and his love affair with the icy Princess Turandot. The Persian word Turandokht, often used to describe princesses from Central Asia in poetry, inspires the opera's title.
On 25 April 1926, one year and five months following Puccini's demise, Turandot had its world debut at Milan, Italy's La Scala opera venue. Rosa Raisa portrayed Turandot. On opening night, tenor Miguel Fleta sang the role of Prince Calaf, and he was replaced by Franco Lo Giudice later in the performance that Arturo Toscanini conducted. The orchestra abruptly stopped playing during Act III.
Subsequent performances took place in the Canary Islands and Amsterdam under the batons of Riccardo Chailly and Kent Nagano, respectively, and in August 2002 at the Salzburg Festival under the baton of Valery Gergiev. Nevertheless, opinions on it were divided. Even before the National Centre for the Performing Arts opened to mixed reviews in late 2007, Chinese composer Hao Weiya completed another piece.
