Tulsa Opera Information
Tulsa Opera is an American opera company that is based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Tulsa Opera Club was founded by five Tulsans, Ralph, Ione Sassano, Bess Gowans, Mary Helen Markham, and Beverly Bliss. The company produces three operas every season, which takes place at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. Tulsa Opera performed Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata on December 4, 1948. Initially, the company used to present light operas and operettas twice a year with one or two professional singers. The company renamed itself Tulsa Opera in 1953.
Tulsa Opera delivered its professional production of Madama Butterfly in November 1953. Ralph Sassano directed it, and for all the principal roles, professional singers were brought in. The Tulsa Performing Arts Center was also built in 1977. Some of Tulsa Opera's former directors include Nicholas Muni, Carol I. Crawford, Carlo Moresco, Bernard Uzan, Edward Purrington, and Greg Weber. Kostis Protopapas was the artistic director of the company from 2008 to 2016.
The current general director and CEO of Tulsa Opera is Ken McConnell, who was first appointed as the interim general director and CEO in 2018. Tobias Picker is the current artistic director of the company who was named to the post in 2016. Tulsa Opera presented a brand new staging of Mozart's Don Giovanni in May 2019. Lucia Lucas was in the title role, which made Tulsa Opera the first American opera company to feature a transgender woman in a principal role.
