Threads Dance Project Information
Karen made the bold move of establishing the professional dancing company she had always imagined. The Threads Dance Project began in that year. As the company's founding Artistic/Executive Director, Charles has produced over 40 works seen by audiences in the Twin Cities and as far away as Atlanta and Philadelphia. In 2015, her piece The Secrets of Slave Songs was nominated for the Minnesota State Academy of the Performing Arts Dance Award, and in 2017, her company was chosen to host the McKnight International Choreographic Fellow.
Karen has received the Archousa of the Year Award from Omicron Boule and the 2020 Celebrating the Sistas Award, both of which honor the achievements and contributions of Black women in the Twin Cities area, and her work has been featured on TPT MN Originals.
In 2022, Charles's dance film Out of the Ashes won the Best Performance Award at the New York City Film & Television Festival. Karen choreographed Girl Shakes Loose (2017) for PENUMBRA Theater and HAIR (2022) for Macalester College. Karen has held teaching and choreographic residencies at the University of Iowa, Carleton College, and Macalester College, and she was the Franklin Visiting Artist/Scholar at the University of Georgia.
