The Wizard of Oz is an American musical fantasy film from1939. The film was released on August 25, 1939. It was produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, with music by Harold Arlen and Herbert Stothart, edited by Blanche Sewell, cinematography by Harold Rosson, as well as directed by Victor Fleming and King Vidor. The Wizard of Oz is regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. The film is also the most commercially successful adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s fantasy novel for children titled “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” from 1900.
The 1939 cast of The Wizard of Oz includes Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale, Frank Morgan as Professor Marvel/The Gatekeeper/The Carriage Driver/The Guard/The Wizard of Oz, Ray Bolger as “Hunk”/ The Scarecrow, Jack Haley as “Hickory”/ The Tin Man, Bert Lahr as “Zeke” / The Cowardly Lion, Billie Burke as Glinda, Charley Grapewin as Uncle Henry, Pat Walshe as Nikko the Winged Monkey king, Clara Blandick as Auntie Em, and a few more artists.
The plot of the Wizard of Oz was about Dorothy Gale, who lives with her dog Toto on a Kansas farm that belonged to Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. The musical has been nominated for the categories of the Best Picture, Best Art Direction, Best Effects, and Special Effects in Academy Awards on February 29, 1940. The team won the Best Music, Original Song Award and remained honorary for the Academy Juvenile Award during the same show. The film left its legacy and was chosen as one of the Great Films by Roger Ebert.
