The Vagina Monologues Information
The Vagina Monologues is a play that was developed and premiered at HERE Arts Center, Off-Off-Broadway, NY, and written by Eve Ensler. An Off-Broadway run followed in 1996 at Westside Theatre. The Vagina Monologues is all about exploring consensual and nonconsensual sexual experiences, genital mutilation, body image, menstrual periods, sex work, vaginal care, and many other similar topics. They all are performed through the eyes of women from various ages, sexualities, races, and other differences.
The Vagina Monologues opened at HERE Arts Center in New York City on October 3, 1996, and quickly became a hit. The first all-transgender performance took place in 2004. It resulted in the creation of the documentary Beautiful Daughters (2006), and eighteen notable transgender women read monologues. The Vagina Monologues was also adapted into a Marathi play called Yonichya Maneechya Gujagoshti in 2009 by feminist writer-activist Vandana Khare.
Initially, every monologue was performed by Eve Ensler herself. Some of the speeches include I Was Twelve; My Mother Slapped Me, My Angry Vagina, My Vagina Was My Village, The Little Coochie Snorcher That Could, The Woman Who Loved to Make Vaginas Happy, Because He Liked to Look At It, I Was There in the Room, and a few more. The Vagina Monologues is a cornerstone for the V-Day movement, which is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Every year, The Vagina Monologues is performed on hundreds of college campuses to produce awareness and open dialogue.
