The Three Musketeers Information
William Anthony McGuire wrote the book for the musical The Three Musketeers, while Clifford Grey and P. G. Wodehouse penned the lyrics, and Rudolf Friml composed the score. The original novel by Alexandre Dumas, père, was published in 1844, and this film is based on it. It follows the exploits of a young man named D'Artagnan as he travels to France and England in 1626 to join the Musketeers of the Guard. Athos, Porthos, and Aramis are his three best friends, representing the three men in the title.
A much-revised Broadway revival attempt in 1984 failed, despite the success of the 1928 original and a 1930 West End run featuring Dennis King as D'Artagnan. Florenz Ziegfeld was the show's initial Broadway producer, McGuire was in charge of the script, and Albertina Rasch was in charge of the choreography. The Lyric Theatre premiered the play on March 13, 1928, and it played for a total of 318 performances.
The cast comprised Clarence Derwent as King Louis XIII of France, Detmar Poppen as Porthos, Joseph Macaulay as Aramis, Vivienne Segal as Constance Bonacieux, and Reginald Owen as Cardinal Richelieu. Dennis King played the role of D'Artagnan. Tom O'Horgan was set to direct a 1984 revival with a new script by Mark Bramble, but he was replaced by Joe Layton just before the show opened. Lester Wilson was responsible for the dance choreography. It launched on November 11 at The Broadway Theatre after 15 preview performances.
