In 2001, Mooney returned to Portland, Oregon, and began studying after working as director of technology at Ticketmaster. She was inspired by Bunny Yeager and started photographing her friends in the pin-up style. Mooney, along with her friend Suhl became one to unite and founded the Suicide Girls website. In 2003, they relocated the website from its original origin Portland to Los Angeles, California. The purpose of creating this website was to give women control over how their sexuality is depicted.
