The Rakes Progress Information
The Rake’s Progress is an opera with three acts and an epilogue by Igor Stravinsky. Chester Kallman and W.H. Auden wrote the libretto of the opera. It is based loosely on the eight engravings and paintings and was performed for the first time in Venice at the Teatro La Fenice on September 11, 1951. It was performed with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, who created Anne Trulove, and Robert Rounseville of Tom Rakewell.
On June 18, 1952, The Rake’s Progress was performed in Paris for the first time at the Opera Comique. It was performed under the baton of Andre Cluytens while Louis Musy was the producer. On February 14, 1953, the opera premiered in the United States at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Fritz Reiner conducted it, and George Balanchine was the producer. The opera was also part of the first season for the Santa Fe Opera, released under the direction of John Crosby.
The Rake’s Progress opera was recorded in 1953 for the first time. Every opera recording had a different cast such as Alexander Young, Judith Raskin, John Reardon, and Regina Sarfaty were featured in the 1964 recording of the opera. Similarly, Philip Langridge, Cathryn Pope, Samuel Ramey, and Sarah Walker were included in the 1983 recording of The Rake’s Progress.
The premiere cast of the opera, featured in the first premiere on September 11, 1951, included Robert Rounseville, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Otakar Kraus, Jennie Tourel, Raffaele Arie, Hugues Cuenod, Nell Tangeman, and Emanuel Menkes.
