American dramatist August Wilson wrote The Piano Lesson in 1987. Wilson's The Pittsburgh Cycle, of which this is the fourth play. Wilson started writing this play by experimenting with different ways of answering whether or not "acquiring] a sense of self-worth by denying one's past" is possible. In 1990, The Piano Lesson won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Wilson, like Troy in the original Fences, was inspired to write a play about a strong female character confronting African-American history after viewing Romare Bearden's painting The Piano Lesson. However, after finishing the play, Wilson realized the ending diverged from the powerful female character and the subject of self-worth. The central question that arises by the end of The Piano Lesson is, "What do you do with your legacy, and how do you best put it to use?"
The Piano Lesson is set in Pittsburgh in 1936, towards the tail end of the Great Depression, and centers on the Charles family and their heritage piano, which an enslaved ancestor ornamented. The siblings' disagreements over how to best utilize the piano serve as the play's central conflict.
